Abstract
This article takes as a starting point the discussion on heritage as a cultural process by Laurajane Smith. Following this line of research, heritage as a cultural process entails the reinterpretation of cultural meanings of the past from the standpoint of the present, and it is this reinterpretation of the past and its contemporary use, what revitalizes heritage. In this context, the purpose of the study is to analyze how a selection of tango musicians of the 21st century redefine the legacy of Piazzolla and how, through this resignification, heritage as a cultural process emerges. The preliminary results are based on a qualitative comparative analysis of interviews conducted with six Argentinian tango musicians active in Buenos Aires. This research contributes to the field of heritage as a cultural process in the context of contemporary tango. It also provides insights into ruptures and continuities with cultural meanings of the past, the creative intervention of the musician when generat-ing new cultural meanings, the development of a personal music style and the educational potential of heritage.
Keywords: Contemporary tango, heritage as a process, Piazzolla.
